Staying Healthy While At Home
It’s so easy during this time to fall off the wagon of your healthy lifestyle. Being at home can lead to some bad habits, which could harm you physically and mentally. As we all face a stay-at-home order amidst COVID-19, we need to remember to take care of ourselves in every way. Now might even be a great time to start new, healthy habits. Maybe you’ve been meaning to try yoga or meditation but just never had the time or chance to start. Or maybe you’ve been meaning to start eating better, but never had the time to learn new meal plans. Whatever it is that you’ve wanted to do to create a healthier lifestyle, now is the time to start.
It’s never been more important than now to take care of yourself. Feeling ‘trapped’ inside doesn’t have to be a negative ordeal. It can, in fact, have some positive outcomes. Just because you’re at home, doesn’t mean you can’t go outside and enjoy nature at its finest. Try taking up some nature photography, go for long leisurely walks, and most importantly, get some much-deserved fresh air. Meditation, even 10 minutes a day, can calm the mind and help you refocus on the day at hand. Meditation has been known to help lower your blood pressure and control anxiety by reducing your stress levels. And let’s face it, our stress levels have been a little higher than normal. Learning a new skill, like cooking, can also help reduce stress. Besides helping you maintain a budget, cooking at home will give you the chance to make healthier decisions. There are some great and easy cooking videos you can use to help you start and the variety of recipes will surprise you. Allrecipes even has a Quarantine Cooking page dedicated to easy-to-make dinners.
There are some great yoga and exercise classes being held via the internet. Check out Vox and see what apps might work best for you. Keeping active, even in small ways will help reduce stress and anxiety as well. The benefits are many and the best part is you’re at home during the workout so there’s no judgment! Just try your best and feel good about moving that body! If a workout is too strenuous, how about working in your garden, simple daily stretches, or taking a walk through the woods or park. Just remember to physically distance yourself from others during the quarantine.
Another way to help stay positive during this time is to limit your usage of social media and news sites. Only use sites you know have correct facts, don’t scroll through social media before bedtime, and maybe look for and write down 5 positives in each day. We are all in this together, you are never alone, and together we’ll get through these trying times healthy and safe.
